    Sammy???

Really? No one has talked about Sosa and #600 last night. I figured it'd be a debated topic similar the Bonds with an (*) numbers... oh well.

However - I was privelaged enough to be at the game last night in Arlington. It was a wonderful sight, even with being a life long Cubs fun and still having bad feelings for the way Sammy walked out on the team, the fans, etc.

I'm sure lots will say this and that about the guy - but congrats to Sammy on #600. I obviously had mixed feelings about Sammy getting #600 against the Cubs. But to be there a part of it, I haven't been at a game with such a milestone achieved. It was pretty cool to be a part of it and it wasn't the reason the Rangers won or the Cubs lost.

So no matter what - Congrats Sammy!!!

    Re: Sammy???

Nice, I always liked watching Sammy in his heyday whenever I went to Wrigley Field, but he seems to have fallen off the edge of the map ever since he got traded. Congrats to the guy, though, he seems to have deserved it.

    Re: Sammy???

I have always liked Sammy, I went to cubs spring training alot though I have not been there in recent years at all. And have met sammy on a few separate occasions. And he would always chit chat(though he spoke little english, and what he did say was hard to understand) and give autograghs. I would say him Mark Grace and Andre Dawson were some of my favorites. Ryne Sandberg was always a a** for the most part, but he always had tons of people gathering around him so I can see why he was that way.

    Re: Sammy???

Sammy brought a lot of smiles in his hey day. Unfortunately he wore out his welcome in Chicago. It was sad to see an icon being shown the door. I'm glad he's having fun again.

    Re: Sammy???

What Sammy did for the Cubs was great for bringing hope to the ball club, but he was not the type of leader you want on the team. Someone like Derek Lee is much improvement.

    Re: Sammy???

Sammy is a WAY nicer guy than Bonds, and I cheered for him to beat McGuire those two seasons, but I think he's a cheater just like the rest of 'em ... its sad, but you can't trust any of these *records anymore ...

    Re: Sammy???

Sammy was one of the few good trades the Cubs have ever made. George Bell didn't do squat with the White Sox, and Sammy put the post Sandberg, Dawson, Maddux and Grace Cubs back on the map.

    Re: Sammy???

I was glad to see Sammy hit #600 as an impact player and not just some relic hanging around to break a record. I always loved watching Sammy just because he always looked like he was enjoying himself, and he sort of reminds me of Cerrano (sp?) from Major League...crushes the ball, but has huge holes in his swing.

    Re: Sammy???

I agree. It's hard to really "congratulate" Sammy (or Mark, or Barry for that matter) knowing the improprieties going on. And as a Cub fan, I have some bad feelings for Sammy, the way his last season or two went with Chicago.

But good for him - I guess. It's still a nice story.

    Re: Sammy???

Sammy will go into the Hall of Fame as a Cub I'm sure because of his 3 seasons of 60+ homers with the Cubs. I'm mixed on him these days. I was tired of his selfish act when he was shown the door but I loved the guy back in his prime. Now I'm not sure if I can still root for him or not even after the humble pie he was served not playing last year.

    Re: Sammy???

Sammy's home run was typical of many he hit in Chicago: a solo shot.

My favorite Sammy home run was during the 2003 playoffs at Turner Field when he hit a big home run to force extra innings I believe. I about crapped my pants. Cubs ended up losing the game but won the series the next night IIRC.

    Re: Sammy???

I still have a Sammy Sosa homerun ball i got at Hohokam that he autographed for me. One of the few autographs I got as a kid that didn't get stolen while I was in ames at ISU =/

Edit: Oh and they were stolen from my home in CR while I was at ISU not in ames lol.

    Re: Sammy???

I would not be so certain that Sammy Sosa gets into the HOF. His only real calling card is his HR total and as the voters indicated this year with McGwire (another guy whose only calling card was his HR total), that may not be enough under the "cloud of suspicion" that exists in today's game.

Sammy's smile and "baseball ben berry berry good to me" approach were quite endearing but other than his ability to hit HRs he really did not display HOF characteristics.

On the other hand, Bonds is a total jerk but he clearly has HOF credentials beyond just his HR totals.

I'm kind of torn over the whole performance enhancing culture in baseball today. It seems all of the wrath of the fans has been placed on the hitters when all indicatations are that a much higher percentage of pitchers are "juicing" than position players. My son takes pitching lessons from a guy that was in the Majors for 6 years and he told me the stuff is rampant. He also indicated that the main reason for Roger Clemens to sign for "partial seasons" the past couple of years is to "game" the drug testing system that is now in place. I'm a year younger than Clemens and to be doing what he is doing at his age is not normal.

I just don't know what to think...let them all in because nearly all were doing it? Keep them all out because they were nearly all doing it? Let the nice guys in and punish the jerks by keeping them out? I just don't know?

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

According to Buster Olney this morning on the radio, Sammy has "no chance" of getting into the Hall of Fame. Unless he was referring to that he wouldn't get in on his first try like McGwire, but it certainly didn't come across that way.
