    KSU Receiving Votes

Kansas State played a good game against UCLA. Thomas ran extremely well as expected. Overall, however, the team didn't bring a huge wow factor.

Their QB was good as far as completion % (11/16), but only made 66 yards in pass plays, compared to Thomas's 234 rushing yards.

UCLA's Offense wasn't that great, throwing 9/26 passes for 120 yards, and a good number of those incompletions were WR errors instead of defensive efforts. They had a variety of guys put up decent running numbers for a total of 193 yards, so their run defense isn't that great. And UCLA is a team that went 7-6 in 2009, winning a bowl game against Temple and having signature wins against Tennessee and Kansas State. That means they're decent, but nothing anybody would call a top notch opponent.

I guess my question is what, beyond Daniel Thomas, makes Kansas State so well respected? I don't see a whole lot that makes me say I should give votes to Kansas State.

This could just be homerism, but I think we have a more complete squad than KSU; they may have the better running back, but we have the better quarterback, which makes our receiving corps much more effective, as well as a solid secondary and a group of linebackers that showed some huge potential. I don't say this to say we should have gotten some votes instead, but rather to say Kansas State doesn't deserve votes any more than we do, and I say we shouldn't be getting votes (yet) anyway.

    Thoughts?

I was at the game. Daniel Thomas ran that team. Their QB squad of Coffman and Klein sucks. It's all a matter of getting it to Thomas and letting him run with it. Stopping Daniel Thomas means you are stopping Kansas State.

I watched part of that game and was impressed by them. As much as Snyder annoyed me in the past he does coach well.

    Re: KSU Receiving Votes

I was extremely impressed by Dan Thomas. Not so much by the rest of that team. They're defense was letting UCLA's receivers get open on a regular basis, but between them dropping a lot of balls, and the QB straight up missing receivers, they were ineffective.

KSU's offense is literally one man. If you stop Daniel Thomas, you stop them. Think ISU in 1996. Hell, they're so ineffective across the rest of their O that Thomas can probably go for 150 yards, and they might have 250 total.

    Re: KSU Receiving Votes

UCLA was embarrassingly bad. I'm amazed they were able to score as many points as they did, their offense was horrible. Thomas and the K-State defense looked good. It's going to be a toss-up in KC.

    Re: KSU Receiving Votes

Any Bill Snyder coached team will maximize their talent and effort. They looked better than I expected but their defense is definitely green, much like ISU's. I'm glad the game is in week 3.

Daniel Thomas is a great runner, but he runs upright which will open him up to hard shots from the D. With as many carries as he's going to get, that can't be a good combination for the entire year. I didn't notice that last year but I did on Saturday.

The winner in week 3 will be the darkhorse to take the north.

    Re: KSU Receiving Votes

Snyder deserves all the respect he gets. As a KU fan I would love to see a team look that organized. Thomas doesn't take that many direct hits. He's pretty elusive for a power back. Winner in week 3 will be a darkhorse for the North but I think MU is more talented on both sides of the ball then KSU and ISU and Nebraska is better then MU. At least it looks like Gill is on his way to providing nice W's for all involved.

I disagree, K-State's defense wasn't at all impressive. The opening drive of the game was UCLA throwing three bad passes then punting. UCLA's offense didn't look good, but it wasn't because of things the K-State defense was doing, but because the QB was making bad throws or the WR's weren't catching the ball. On the ground, UCLA put up almost 200 yards between 5 guys who ran more than 25 yards. The defense made some plays, but not enough to be considered anything more than an average defensive unit.

UCLA's offense was inconsistent, and KSU's offense had Thomas, and that's all it took to outscore the Bruins.
