Key to having a chance at beating Iowa on Sat.

Paul Rhoads now has a coaching record of 8-6 as the head of the Iowa State Football program.

8-0 when Iowa State has held opponents to 23 or fewer points a game.
0-6 when Iowa State has allowed opponents to score 24 or more points in a game.

If the Cyclones can hold the Hawkeyes to 23 or fewer points on Saturday, that will put Iowa State in a situation with a chance to win the game. I believe the Cyclones have a chance to do this. The Hawkeyes averaged scoring 23.15 points a game as a team in 2009. Give up more than 23 points, and it will become very difficult for the Cyclones to win this one.

well if that's all it takes let's just run the ball, use all the play clock and play keep away all day.

That's an eerie convergence of stats.

    Edit: Unfortunately they're averaging 37 for 2010.

I think they have just as good of a chance at winning this as the Hawks.

Seeing that makes me realize that the man has a chance (albeit early in his tenure) to finish whatever time he spends here with a winning record. How many of our coaches have done that?

Nickel and dime the ball down the field doesn't bother me.

Re: Key to having a chance at beating Iowa on Sat.

First would be to win the turnover battle. That's how we got pounded last year. The defense actually played a pretty good ballgame until the second half when they started seeing way too much field. Offense has to hold onto the ball this year.

Second would be to actually put the ball in the end zone this year. I know we all think 2007 was cool in that we won without scoring a TD, but this TD-less streak has to end.

Run the ball and stop the run.

I think the biggest key to beating Iowa on saturday is having more points on the scoreboard than Iowa does but that's just me.

I think that will be easier to do the fewer points (23 and fewer to be exact) the Cyclones allow the Hawkeyes to put on the scoreboard, but that's just me.

Re: Key to having a chance at beating Iowa on Sat.

I think our best shot is to control the clock and win a low scoring game. We need our front seven to win the battle in the trenches and force Stanzi to have to make plays. He may make some but he's also shown he can make costly mistakes

If Iowa's offense comes out and does whatever they want, we're in big trouble

Re: Key to having a chance at beating Iowa on Sat.

I think getting the touchdown monkey off our back early will give us a big psychological boost. If we do that, I think we have a slight chance of pulling an upset, but granted, it's still not much of a chance, in my mind.

I hope CPR and the boys prove me wrong, though.

Re: Key to having a chance at beating Iowa on Sat.

I am encouraged by our ability to complete short and midrange passes against NIU lasat week. AA wasn't perfect but he completed 75% of his passes and made some very good 3rd down conversions.

I am hoping that the run game improves and is complimented by accurate short passes to stretch drives and control the game clock.

We have the talent to beat Iowa, we just need to execute. (Which did NOT happen last year obviously.)
