  1. Re: New brewery coming to Valley Junction - West Des Moines

That's not true in Iowa. Native breweries in Iowa are actually licensed the same as distributors. They are allowed to have a single retail license which can sell any and all beer (including beer from...

Re: Anyone here brew their own beer?

    I brew my own :)
Though I haven't home-brewed in a long time now. Just don't have the time for it anymore.

It's a great hobby, and there are lots of folks that do it these days. There are a...

    Re: The cost of Craft-article

I don't think that the government has an official definition of "craft brewer". As far as they are concerned, a 1bbl nano and a 1000bbl macro are the same in terms of taxes and regulation (in...

    Re: Beer ratings sites

I like to watch them all. The most informed ratings are generally Ratebeer. The most fanatical are on BeerAdvocate. The most common is untappd.

That's mostly just my observation, though.

    Re: Beer Trading

In and around the Decorah area, I bet they sell more Dorothy's than almost anything else. It probably sells at least 2:1 over everything else in their taproom. It's sort of their "fat tire" in the...

Re: cityview top 100 bars in Des Moines

I take all of these lists with a grain (or block) of salt.

Also note that this is "100 Bars that they like", not "top 100". Take that for what it's worth

    Re: Pumpkin beer power rankings

I think it's right around 6% this year. it moves around a little depending on how much of the pumpkin ferments (if any). It's kinda a pain to brew with actual pumpkin, which is why a lot of breweries...

Trivia time: Punkin Ale from Dogfish was Sam's first beer he ever brewed.

    Re: Best "Cheap" Beer

"Better" is relative. Glass still is better in a lot of ways than cans, depending on the cans, canning line, seamer and QA/QC program.

And for many craft beers, bottles make a lot more sense. For...

    Re: Pumpkin beer power rankings

We are. It'll be on tap in 2 hours and 22 minutes.
It's a little more subtle than a lot of spice bombs, but definitely pumpkin-y!

Weather couldn't be much better for a fall seasonal release!

Re: Top 10 beers you want to try

If you want to try Pliny, or really anything, badly enough, get your hands on a few bottles of Pseudo Sue from TG (that'll get easier soon), and then go to BeerAdvocate's trade forums.
    You can...

Re: 50 States Rated for Beer

It's all very complicated and depends on:
    Where the brewery is located
    What the state laws are
What the brewery wants to/can do (i.e. do they want to be in that state, and if so, can they produce...
  13. Re: Coming Soon...Iowan Craft Beer Hall downtown DM

You know I'm not entirely sure who the license holder is for the state fair, but either the fair as a whole area is licensed and then they have vendors come in to do the serving, or the vendors are...

Re: Templeton Rye is a Fake

Well the wort is all produced there. It's all fermented/conditioned on site at the individual restaurants. Kinda a novel business model.
  15. Re: Coming Soon...Iowan Craft Beer Hall downtown DM

It's still around as of a few weeks ago. They just can't serve beer on it. They go from bar to bar on it though, so I guess that's fun. It's probably less of a city thing and more of a state thing....

    Re: Kids in a bar/Thoughts

They basically exempted a taproom associated with a brewery from the regulations. Since the state has no restrictions on this, they can be in there basically whenever they want.

    We will probably...

Someone suggested selling $4 bowls of pretzels that come with a $1 beer. :biglaugh:

    Re: Kids in a bar/Thoughts

Clive has sort of a passive aggressive history with a few of the bars on 86th street when they've had some real problems in the past. That's what this ordinance stems from. They banned food trucks...

    Re: Kids in a bar/Thoughts

In Des Moines, kids have to be out by 9 PM I believe.
Knoxville wrote an exception into their city code for Peace Tree, who is going after pretty much the same thing we are.

Well hey everyone! I feel somewhat uniquely suited to contribute to this discussion.

First off, let's define some terminology here. Legally we have a class BB beer permit. We can sell beer and...
