Re: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Saw it this past weekend and enjoyed it. Not raving about it at all, but worth a watch on the big screen.

Good point on the Koba character. I'd forgotten that as I watched the movie I was...

Re: The Other Place in Ames

Well....when you're dealing in the black market, a low profile is mostly likely desired and by design.

Re: Just drove by campus town

What comes around, goes around. Original location for People's Drug (before it was People's bar and then whatever it turned into after that).

Re: Ankeny soon to be bigger than Dubuque

That is a good summary. Ankeny has everything anyone probaly ever really"needs" and then some (e.g...short drive to Ames). The conversation after that involves "wants" . i.e....better restaurants,...

Re: Ankeny soon to be bigger than Dubuque

yes, growth is a point to evaluate, but you r missed the point. When people were criticizing Ankeny for being “soulless”, having no sense of place, etc, coming back with quoting the growth rate...

Re: Ankeny soon to be bigger than Dubuque

The hatin' on Ankeny is a bit overkill on the thread but in the same light, resorting to growth rate to defend it doesn't prove anything either. That is lazy.

    Case-in-point: there are a hell...

Re: Ankeny soon to be bigger than Dubuque

One of the big downsides of traditional suburb built cities. All the traffic is fed to and flows to feeder streets such as this.

Also, another reason I really appreciate working downtown. Tons of...

Re: Ankeny soon to be bigger than Dubuque

For decades the predictions have forcasted continued flight to the suburbs at the expense of core cities. It is only within the last decade that I've heard predictions this could be changing. ...
  9. Re: Looking for something to do this weekend

Drive out to Saylorville and look at the spillway. Kids love to watch the power of the water and dodge the slight chances of getting sprayed a bit. Drive across the top of the dam. Stop and...

Re: Ankeny soon to be bigger than Dubuque

Ankeny is not for me, but the one thing I did LOVE about living there was the shortened drive to Ames. That is a big plus for Ankeny and why its growth is nothing but positive news for helping build...

Re: Ankeny soon to be bigger than Dubuque

The problem with that is that younger professionals (YPs) of today, unlike those of just 10 years ago, much prefer living in urban areas. They WANT to work and live in downtown areas. Office parks...
  12. Re: Looking for something to do this weekend

Kids that age love the Science Center, so even though it has been mentioned, I'll stress that option. I'm a fan of the Music Man but pretty sure I wouldn't have been at those ages so I might pass on...
  13. Re: CF--Do you sometimes refer to a neighbor by a group they belong to?

    Of course. We have:

The Postals (neighbor that gets angry when he mistakenly gets our mail)
    Hawkeye Bastards (self explanatory)
The Owl - guy who is always roaming around...sees and reports...

    Re: Mowing the Lawn

Guy is creating the recipe to assure his child is a light sleeper.

Best thing you can do, is not overly shield your child from noise while they sleep. It helps them be more sound sleepers down...

    Re: Mowing the Lawn

Sorry if this has been asked/answered but don't have energy to scan entire thread. Have you tried a white noise machine? We never had problems napping our daughter no matter what was going on...
  16. Re: Baconfest expands (again). Moving downtown to Iowa Events Center

Admittedly, some of the draw is just the hype...which goes along with selling out tickets each year within minutes of going on sale.

  18. Baconfest expands (again). Moving downtown to Iowa Events Center

I can't think of another event that has grown year-over-year more than Baconfest. If I'm not mistaken, didn't this start at El Bait Shop just 8 yrs ago? Now it is moving to the Iowa Event Center...

    Re: Recommend Best Microwave Popcorn

We actually gave up on microwave popcorn after the numerous articles kept coming out about the health hazards. I dont' know if those warnings are overblown or not, but now that we've switched to air...

Saw it. Enjoyed it. Didn't live up to the level of positive reviews IMO, but am glad I saw it on the big screen.
