I just don't buy Lanning getting any LB snaps and being successful at it if he does.

It took a guy like Jeremiah George a good 4 years before he could pick up LB and know where to be at all times. I don't see how Lanning can try it out for one preseason (along with getting QB, HB, And whatever other position reps) and be a Big 12 LB unless our guys are dog **** which I don't think is the case.

Great article, first of all. There is some other positions that I have wondering about like linebacker, punter, and star/Nickelback. Last year Payne, Edwards, and Daniels were playing in the star position, but I could see all of them being moved to other positions. As for punter obviously the starter will be Colin, but what is the other options is there? I'm more concerned for punting situation next year. Is Sutton supposed to play Mike or Sam?

Matt Leo doesn't look like he could benefit from the weight room at all. He appears to be in the maintenance phase at this point :D

As I suspected they would, he has been listed on the roster as DL. I imagine they will work him into various pass rushing situations as a specialist.

I'm excited about the defensive front; the inside is actually well stocked- just lacks experience. The time is now for Vernell Trent.

I'm also anxious to hear about the progress of JD Waggoner coming off injury; were there also rumblings that Carson Lensing had an impressive redshirt year?

"On paper, this might be the best group of wide receivers in the history of Iowa State football. I don’t think that is an exaggeration either."

I think we can take the "might be" out of that sentence and put "is". With all due respect to some of the nice groups we've had on the field, I don't remember any group as good as this one.

I know you are writing about start of spring practice ... but no mention of the grad transfer OL guys? Seems the coaching staff sees the need. People are probably wondering when they will make it on campus.

They were mentioned:

Decent, not great, across the board when it comes to starters (but better when you consider the two grad-transfers who will be in town this summer).

FWIW. I don't think that Lanning will ever be a full-time linebacker. I do think they could use him in spots though, which is what I'm guessing they are looking at.

I'd love to see him in and cause and recover a fumble as a LB, then come out as QB the very next play.

If we have a solid starter in Park and a capable backup in Zeb, it really opens up a lot of options for Lanning. They can have a whole package dedicated to him. We can let him be the physical player he likes to be without risking the whole offense if he gets a little dinged up. The great thing is we can go big with him in there and he can still throw a pass if they load the box.
