Why hasn't Marcus Fizer's jersey been retired?
They showed the jerseys hanging from the rafters and he didn't have one up there. For that matter, on paper Jamaal Tinsley, an all-american ought to be retired...based on what he did on the floor.
Thoughts?

I believe ISU does not retire numbers of players that do not graduate. That explains the lack of both Fizer and Tinsley.
If Fizer were to complete his degree today, I would think that his number could get retired.

Don't you have to graduate?

Not positive but I think you need 4 years under your belt to be retired

I swear this thread comes up at least three times a year.

Gotta graduate. Maybe they decide to come back and get the degree but I wouldn't come to school to have my number retired by any means.

I Kind of understand the thought process the University has but with the way college basketball has changed it makes it very tough to keep a guy 4 years/come back to graduate, who would be justified of retiring there number.

I think (based only on previous threads, so TTWAGOS) that the graduation thing is it, not the 4 years thing. I'm okay with that.
I get that this isn't the norm, but to throw that out, you're pretty much saying (publicly and loudly) that college sports isn't about education at all. I'm not naive enough to think that it actually is, but the current game in college sports is to keep up enough of a semblance of education that it keeps the tax man away (admitting it's just a profit thing means college sports lose their non-profit status).
Personally, I'm a little sentimental about the true student athlete, so if the pretend stuff keeps some educationally based criteria in place, I'm cool with it.

Just curious, do other
Universities have a similar policy?
Pretty sure at least Texas doesn't cause they recently retired Kevin Durant's number, and he was obviously only there for one year. Incidentally their fan base debated whether it was right or wrong.

KU retired Paul Pierce, and Mario Chalmers (on vs. Texas game day). Both of them only went to school for 3 years.

They say that English surnames came from what you did with your life. I'm so glad my last name isn't Dickinson. -

I like to think that you need the whole package to retire jersey at ISU. Graduate, great player, and good character. Fizer and Tinsley unfortunately only meet 1 of 3 criteria.
