Here's the release from Iowa State.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg announced today the promotion of Charlie Henry to assistant coach. Henry was the Cyclones’ director of player development last season.

Henry replaces Doc Sadler, who left in April to become the head coach at Southern Miss, on the coaching staff.

“Having worked with Charlie the past two years, I’ve seen how valuable he is to our program,†Hoiberg said. “Charlie is a hard worker with great attention to detail. He is very dedicated to helping our program and our players improve. Charlie is as good a young basketball mind as I’ve ever been around and has a bright future as a basketball coach. I have no doubt he will be a huge asset to our staff.â€

Henry, a graduate of Madonna University in Livonia, Mich., has had stops at the high school, college and professional level in his career.

Out of college, Henry spent time as an assistant coach at Romulus High School in Detroit, Mich., which was followed by a one year stint at the University of Utah as a graduate manager under Jim Boylan.

In 2011-12, Henry worked for the Indiana Pacers as a video coordinator. The Pacers advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals in his only season with the organization.

Henry, a native of Canton, Mich., arrived at Iowa State in 2012-13 as a graduate assistant before being promoted to director of player development for the 2013-14 season.

Hmmm. Seems like a lot of nice Michigan connections there. Look forward to seeing who else comes to us from that state.

    He's only 28?

I'm trying to figure out now where I went wrong in life.

I would pretend to complain, but there's no way Fred made a mistake here. This will be an excellent hire.
Congrats to Charlie Henry on the promotion!

Well, he already has several strikes against him: :jimlad:

    1. The above mentioned success early in his life (forcing me to re-evaluate my own life decisions)

    2. While, not quite "dreamy", is still way better looking than me

    3. Has two first names for his first/last name.

    4. Doesn't look like he can pull off the "twice-divorced, traveling salesman, messy hair, loosened tie, chilling in an airport bar with a glass of bourbon"-look that Doc Sadler has mastered.

In all seriousness, it's a great hire and it's awesome that we've moved from the stage of Fred hiring more-experienced people to help him learn the ropes, to now promoting from within and building up people. I'm sure there were lots of quality people that threw their hat into the ring for the opening so for Henry to nab the job speaks highly of him.

There doesn't have to be one. So there could just be 3 assistants.

This would have been an issue 4 years ago. But I think Fred has proven that he wants to win very badly and is going to hire the best possible assistants.

Wasn't Clyburn from Romulus? Will must have followed him to Utah.

    Chris,
im curious about two things, what was the time table that ended up announcing this now? And did they formally interview any other candidates?

Obviously, Fred knows much more about this hire than any of us. There is always the possibility this will work out no better than the internal football hire, Messingham. However, you have to put your faith in Fred's experience in NBA management to make the best decision. Fred also didn't have the NCAA coaching "resume" when he was hired and that turned out well.

My initial reaction is that I would have expected a hire with more experience based on what we were replacing. That said, Fred hasn't missed on much since he was hired so looks good to me.
