I am about to make the trek from Charleston to Ohio (10 hours or so) and then to Iowa a few days later. So my question of the week is:

What's the best car trip you've ever taken? The longest? Ever just drive until you end up somewhere?

We always drove for vacation growing up so we had some 8-12 hour days to get w hetew we were going. My wife and I just did 11 hours of driving last Saturday.

For road trips XM might have been the best invention ever.

Pretty sure the longest was from Des Moines to Red Lake, Ontario, for a fishing fly-in.

Our family of 4 drove to the Northern Virginia area from WDSM in late June to visit my sister. In previous years we had flown, so this was a new experience for us. We wanted to visit the Pro FB Hall of Fame so we took the turnpike route across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania which was very expensive and not very scenic. On the way back we drove through western Maryland and West Virginia which was absolutely gorgeous. Our 2 sons even co existed in a positive manner for most of the drive, which is a victory in itself.

When I was in Junior High my family went on a road trip from Des Moines to New Hampshire to visit family.

When my wife and I were dating we drove almost 20 hours straight from Des Moines to Savannah, Georgia and we didn't kill each other.

Wife and I went from Iowa to Kentucky, visited college buddy & wife, on to Georgia to visit family, on to Florida to visit family & friends, to Mississippi & New Orleans just weeks b4 Katrina, visiting one more family member, then finally home. Shared the driving in our then new honda accord. (Which now has over 280,000 miles on it!). A very fun and memorable trip!

My dad and I drove a Uhaul years ago with my Grandma's things in it when she moved from DC to Minnesota, highlight of the trip was stopping at the Football HOF in Canton.

Drove from CR to Yellowstone as a kid and from CR to Wash DC also. Fun family trips. Some fun softball road trips as well driving. CR to Dallas, Bismarck, and Sterling Heights, Michigan were the longest.

I've driven my car from Omaha to Blacksburg Va. multiple times to visit my parents. Last time stopped by Morgantown WV for the game.
I've ridden my motorcycle to lots of different destinations across the country. I love a good road trip

Best trip was probably going down to Shreveport for a bowl game. Longest was KC to SoCal in a UHaul.

When I first got out of college I worked in Maryland. Would make the 17- 18 hour drive back to Iowa solo. Would not even dream about doing that now.

probably a judging trip to Pennsylvania. We had way too much fun on the way back - about 15 hours straight through.

The road trip to TN, AL, and back with the husband was interesting. We didn't kill each other so that's a plus!

Our longest was picking up a son in LA, driving up the Cali coast to the Bay area, then coming back to Iowa on a northern route, stopping at Mt. Rushmore. Probably the best was taking the kids to D.C. when they were younger, with stops at Cedar Point and Gettysburg and other miscellaneous sights. However, the bowl trip to Memphis was also awesome and much shorter than lots of our trips. One of the boys was telling a friend about taking a trip to Florida and when the friend asked what airline he was taking, he said "this is my cheap parents, we are driving of course." At least he had a bit of a smile when he said it.

I've had a few 20+ hour hauls. Tempe & NYC for bowl games, South Florida for a spring break, and DC. Driven to Houston/Galveston twice, once for the bowl game. One of the trips we stayed at probably the shadiest hotel in the history of the world in Waco.

Drove to south padre island from Ames for spring break when I was a sophomore with 4 other people in my mercury sable, 22 hours there nonstop, that was brutal, I wouldn't recommend. Also drove from Janesville Wisconsin to New York for New Years which was 15/16 hours in a prius, that wasn't so bad but it wasn't great either. The memories made on the trips made all the driving worth while.
