Well, duh. This is the fifth day of the state fair already. ;) Of course I've been there, and will be back.

West-O smoky red was good. Lions gate from CR had a tasty stout. Sorry lions bridge.

Had a few there this weekend. The only one I didn't like was a Kalona beer. Had a really good porter, had the Peace Tree red.
The craft beer tent is a great addition to the fair. They are outgrowing that spot but it's nice that it's "somewhat hidden."

West Coast IPA by Great River Brewing was really good.

Kalona Sucha Much IPA is also really good, but only if you love piney hops.

Exile Hannah. Big fan of them. They have an IPA on tap there for you hop heads.

i'm a big fan, but certain evenings it is almost too busy. I realize this is a great problem to have, but still

Funny. Kalona is my wife's favorite.

I tried most of the non-central Iowa beers. Mostly IPAs or other Ales. Nothing really knocked my socks off, but the only one I really didn't like was the Okoboji Veneration. Just had an odd taste.

Went Friday night - I didn't think it was all that busy. Bit of a line early on getting tickets, but not bad. Never had to stand behind more than one person to get a beer. Could use a bit more seating perhaps.

Pretty sure they are relatively new, and only kegging at the moment. Believe they have some beers at El Bait Shop (or did a while ago).

Anyone that went know if they had any of the new Firetrucker stuff from Ankeny there? Hear about it a couple of months ago, apparently will specialize in smoked beers.

I had a Hannah at the Adventureland brew 'bar'. Really liked it. Reminded me of Shocktop.

That's exactly where I first tried it as well. Taste just as good in a bottle too.

I've just never loved an Exile beer, or even found it above average. And it's not just preferring hops to malt. There are malty beers at Confluence, Olde Main, or Backpocket that are much better in my mind. The food is great though.

I was at Lake Time Brewing in Clear Lake and Mason City Brewing on Friday. Was surprised by how good both were. Lake Time had a really solid IPA, and my wife had their Strawberry Wheat, which is a style I normally don't care for, but was done extremely well. Mason City had a great milk stout and Session Pale.

Friday night was East side night. I'm sure the Bud tent and the Depot were packed.

110% agree. I think Confluence makes outstanding beer and Exile is just OK.

I haven't been there in a while but when it first opened they would ask if you'd want a pint or half liter. The half liter was like a buck more but its only an ounce more of beer. Most people at the bar would say a half liter since that sounds like a lot more beer but its really not. I would shake my head and go WTF?

Agreed on Exile. Never been a fan - although they really focus more on Pilsners and Lagers, not my cup of tea. But their IPA sucks. And it's too bad. Their location and building are nice, and the one time I ate there it was excellent. Have heard some bad things about their service - and talking about the managers and such. I never had a problem. But the head of our bike club refuses to setup events there - and he's about the easiest going guy in the world.

How long has Lake Time been around? Don't recall that one.

Not from what I understand. Bad night at the fair I guess. But regardless - I doubt the two crowds cross over much

Beck Black IPA at Confluence is the best beer out of the metro IMO. Not even close. Although I really have become a fan of 515's lineup of IPAs. Dart Dodger is really good, as are the OJ and Hopititus C.

Are you suggesting that Eastside Des Moinesers (Moinesians? Moinesites?) aren't sophisticated beer drinkers?

I also didn't particularly enjoy the beer at Exile. Every beer I've tried there I found myself thinking "I really could have just ordered a Coors Light and been fine with it."
