It seems like this has been an ongoing issue in Ames.

How in the world does this happen? Oh, unless it was planned. Either way, horrible.

The last 2 incidents I believe were alcohol related and suicidal respectively. Just terrible though. It seems like you only hear about this happening in Ames.

Interestingly they just ran a story on the Today show about the rising fatalities at railroad crossings.

Seems to happen monthly in Chicago by both the Metra and L trains.

More likely to be an accident in Chicago, especially with Metra trains. People try to run around their stopped train to cross the tracks before the train departs, then they get nailed by another train going the opposite direction. For some reason, the trains run on the opposite side as vehicle traffic, so people don't even look sometimes because they think they can see that nothing is coming on the other tracks.

I'd be more concerned for the engineer who had to watch knowing there was nothing he could do. The person on the tracks accepted that terror when they layed on them.

Yeah, its hard to go after someone who is in such a terrible place themselves they feel suicide is the only answer, but if you kill yourself in a way you force someone else to be a participant, its a pretty big **** move.

I feel terrible for the conductors & engineers who can do nothing but watch as they are unable to stop.

A guy I worked with actually had a job where he supervised cleanup whenever this happened on the LA Metro Rail. It happened pretty frequently. I feel like he should have been paid more to do that.

You're not wrong, at all.
