ISU v. Lindenwood, My Personal Observations
The Cyclones were taken to the school of hard knocks by the Lions last night. Final score: 6-3 Lions. The Lion's physicality plus the experience of their senior dominated team were simply too much for our boys to overcome. The 'Clones made too many fundamental errors with the puck and Lindenwood capitalized almost every time.
On a couple of the Lions' goals, the Cyclones shot the puck to center ice, rather than working it up the boards, only to have an opposing player intercept and score on the break isolated against the good guys' net minder. On another couple of occasions, when the Lions were attacking the Cyclone goal, both defensemen were guarding the puck, rather than one defenseman guarding the goalie's backside. As a result, an opposing player scored an easy goal past the goalie's back. Neither scenario makes any goal keeper happy. The Cyclones definitely had a very sad and frustrated goalie last night.
Due to those fundamental mistakes and other errors, Lindenwood was able to control the puck at critical times when the Cyclones were trying to rally. Particularly the ISU players had a hard controlling the puck during power plays, and were only one for four on those opportunities. Such was Lindenwood's control on the puck, the Cyclones only made four shots on goal during the entire second period while the Lions made two goals on eleven shots.
The game started well for ISU as they played with energy, were physical, and played good team hockey. The Cyclones scored a goal within the first ten minutes, but gave up three to end the period. The wheels fell off in the second period as described above and the Lions went ahead 5-1. The third period was more competitive as our boys scored a goal on a power play early in the period and the Lions responded with a goal of their own soon afterward. Late in the third, the Cyclones scored their final goal on a nice pass play in front of the Lions' net shooting past their prone net minder to make the final score of 6-3.
