Twas the night before The Season, when all through The Jack
Not a creature was stirring, not even a Coach Mac.
The helmets were hung by the lockers with care,
In hopes that The Season soon would be there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Pancake blocks danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long off season nap.
When out on the field there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-laid sod
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects from God.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But the mighty Coach Chizik, and eleven ripped players.
Merry Season Opener to All and to All a Good Game! Go Cyclones!
Iowa State became the Cyclones after they leveled Northwestern in 1895. As the Chicago Tribune (9/29/1895) noted:
'Struck by a Cyclone
It Comes from Iowa and Devastates Evanston Town'
