There is a small percent of the population in OK that thins the term "Okie" is an insult. It started in the Dust Bowl era when people were fleeing the state. This homeless and poor population was often tabbed "Okies" by people from outside the state. It is synonymous with "White trash" for some people.
One of my native Oklahoma friends (and grad of Okie State) recently told me it is offensive to call it "Okie State." I told him he is a d-bag because I have called it that for as long as I can remember. Does your post mean I win the argument?
I've gotten scolded for that a time or two myself. I say Okie is fine, too many people are overly sensitive
