Late recruiting weekend ends with big commitments

Combine the timing that is the last weekend in January with a home basketball game and generally, that equals an important couple of days on the football recruiting trail.

Iowa State received good news on Sunday when three of its top remaining targets in the final days before National Signing Day verbally committed. The Cyclones snagged pledges from running back Michael Warren, New Mexico Military Institute defensive lineman Terry Ayeni, and Florida cornerback prospect Mike Johnson

Trey Scott from Scout.com first reported the commitment news.

Ayeni chose the Cyclones over offers from South Florida, Northern Illinois and potentially Mississippi State. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound lineman recorded seven sacks and 14 tackles for a lost as a sophomore last season. He will have three years to play two at the next level.

Warren, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound running back out of Lawton, Okla., chose Iowa State over offers from Washington State, Wake Forest, Tulsa, Toledo and Southern Miss. It is important to note too that he was receiving interest as a possible last-minute addition to the classes of Oklahoma State and Wisconsin too.

According to his Twitter feed, Clearwater, Fla. Countryside cornerback Mike Johnson has committed to Iowa State as well. CycloneFanatic.com has not been able to confirm this commitment, but both Scout and Rivals.com are reporting it.

CLICK HERE to view Johnson’s profile over at Rivals.com. It lists multiple offers from the likes of: Arizona, Cincinnati, East Carolina, Florida State, Indiana, Louisville, Purdue, Rutgers, South Florida, Syracuse, Texas Tech, Central Florida, Vanderbilt and Virginia.
